Why does Sydney have the worst road infrastructure among all Australia’s major cities when it’s the most funded and economically developed city?
When I first drove to Sydney (from Melbourne) in 1974, I was amazed at the poor condition of the roads. One, a main arterial road, was like a saw-tooth road with concrete slabs tilted due to poor foundations. It was peak hour, and cars could only do a maximum of 20 km/h.
Fast forward to today, and unfortunately, not much has changed. Sydney’s road infrastructure is still regarded as the worst among all major Australian cities, despite being the most funded and economically developed city in the country.
Sydney’s Road Infrastructure: The Current State
Sydney’s road infrastructure is a mess. The city’s roads are congested, potholed, and poorly maintained. The city’s drivers spend countless hours stuck in traffic, and the situation is only getting worse. According to a recent report by the Australian Automobile Association, the average Sydneysider spends 154 hours per year stuck in traffic. That’s more than six days of their life wasted in traffic jams.
Reasons Behind Sydney’s Poor Road Infrastructure
There are several reasons behind Sydney’s poor road infrastructure. One of the primary reasons is the city’s rapid population growth. Sydney’s population has been rapidly increasing over the past few decades, and the city’s road infrastructure has not been able to keep up with the growth. As a result, the roads are overcrowded, and traffic congestion is a significant problem.
Another reason behind Sydney‘s poor road infrastructure is the lack of investment in public transport. Sydney’s public transport system is inadequate, and many residents are forced to rely on cars to get around. This puts additional pressure on the city’s roads and contributes to traffic congestion.
Finally, there is also a lack of political will to address the issue. Successive governments have failed to invest adequately in the city’s road infrastructure, and as a result, the problem has only gotten worse.
The Impact of Poor Road Infrastructure on Tourism
Sydney’s poor road infrastructure has a significant impact on tourism. Visitors to the city are often frustrated by the traffic congestion and poor road conditions. This can lead to a negative impression of the city, which can impact future tourism numbers.
