I was born in Melbourne 55 years ago, and as far back as I can remember, that is the term we, a Melbournian called them, a Sydneysider. So, the name down south has been around longer than me. I did inquire once or twice why we called them that when I was younger, but never got a satisfactory answer. However, as I grew older and started traveling around Australia, I realized that this term is widely used across the country, and not just in Melbourne.
