If you’re planning a trip to Sydney, you’re likely to need a reliable mobile network to stay connected. But with so many options available, it can be difficult to determine which one is the best. As a frequent traveler to Sydney, I’ve had the opportunity to test out several mobile networks and can offer some insights.
Table of Contents
Optus: The Good and the Bad

I am with Optus and I can at least say you could expect a better network than what Optus has to offer. I have experienced several times not having any coverage in places where I expected better than just network coverage : – once in Manly, outside the ferry terminal, in the city, and in the suburbs.
While Optus is often touted as one of the best mobile networks in Sydney, my personal experience has been mixed. On the one hand, Optus offers extensive coverage throughout the city, including in many rural areas. However, I’ve also experienced several instances where I’ve had no coverage in places where I expected better. For example, I once had no coverage in Manly, outside the ferry terminal, and also in the city and suburbs.
Telstra: The Top Contender

If you’re looking for the best mobile network in Sydney, Telstra is the top contender. Telstra has the most extensive coverage of any mobile network in the city, with coverage even in some remote areas. In addition, Telstra offers fast download and upload speeds, making it ideal for streaming and downloading large files.
While Telstra may be more expensive than other mobile networks, the network’s extensive coverage and fast speeds make it worth the investment. If you’re planning to travel outside of Sydney, Telstra is also a good choice, as it offers coverage throughout much of the country.
Vodafone: A Solid Option

If you’re looking for a more affordable mobile network that still offers good coverage, Vodafone is a solid option. While Vodafone may not have the same extensive coverage as Telstra, it still offers coverage throughout much of the city, including in some rural areas.
Vodafone also offers affordable plans, making it a good choice for budget-conscious travelers. However, it’s worth noting that Vodafone’s download and upload speeds may not be as fast as Telstra’s, so if you plan to stream or download large files, you may want to consider another network.
